An Analytical Study of Critical Reflection Thinking Methods of the Characters As Found in The Vesantara Jataka 2011

Abstract

The objectives of this thesis are 1) to study the historical background and importance of the Vessantara Jataka in general, 2) to study critical reflection thinking methods of important characters in the Vessantara Jataka ,and 3) to study the advantage from the results of Critical Reflection Thinking Methods of the important characters appearing in the VessantaraJ ataka by analyzing the information from documents and the related research.

                   The result of the study found that the Vessantara Jataka included 13 parts, and it was originated from the event when the Lord Buddha had come to visit his relatives at Kapilavastu.  Furthermore, the study on the role of the characters found that: 1) the characters are grateful and generous; 2) kind and hold on public opinion as well as sacrifices for the people; 3) love, care and being compassion to teach and promote the good thing for the child and family by practicing the four virtues; and 4) love and respect to the wife, and also responsible for the caring and preservation of dignity and honor of the wife with serenity.       

             The study also found that, according to Buddhism, there are 10 categories of critical reflection thinking methods. It has very important role on thinking process as it enable one to improve his/her thinking process in obtaining valuable knowledge. Moreover, the study found that the important characters in the Vessantara Jataka have a skillful thinking process in the sense that they can implement the thinking process in cultivating and perfecting their behaviors. Positively, such thinking process also helps to create the sound society in various dimensions such as economic, political and social issues.

          The advantage of this study can be summarized as follows:  1) in social aspects, it promotes harmony and generosity to the society; 2) in economic aspects, it helps the member of the society to maintain interpersonal relationship and that of living in comfort; 3) in the political aspects, it promotes the ruler of the society to rule righteously and creates a good governmental system where everyone is subjected to the laws of the country; and 4) in cultural and traditional aspects, the critical reflection thinking methods of important characters in the Vessantara Jataka help in generating moral society where the people engage with meritorious actions and believe on causes and results.
