A Study of Garavata in Theravada Buddhism of Khon Kaen Sports School Students 2011

Abstract

This is a quantitative and qualitative research presenting analysis with statistics and descriptive questionnaires. The analysis focuses on the study of Garavata in Theravada Buddhism of students of Khon Kaen Sport School by interview and behavior observation and questionnaires for these objectives – to study Garavata in Theravda Buddhism, to study the lack of Garavata of Students of Khon Kaen Sport School, and to study the way to solve that problem.

                        The research findings indicate that Buddhism has influenced Thai people very much. They accepted and respect Buddhism as the tool for mental refuge, for being as the base of Thai culture. Thai people in the ancient time brought Garavata in order to live together in society. They were under this Dhamma and Buddhist teaching as base of living by applying them into society properly.

                From the study of the behavior problem on the lack of Garavata of students from behavior observation data, it was found that students’ behaviors show off in social and educational way at`X   3.05   (S.D. = 1.08), in   the way of   life   development    at `X = 2.93 (S.D. =1.03), in the way of life-living at `X = 2.97 (S.D. = 0.96), and social way   at `X = 2.90 (S.D.=1.05). According to influence on students’ life-living from analyzing questionnaire, it was found that parent’s behavior as model influenced student’s behavior very much at`X = 2.13 (S.D.=1.13)  and the   group  of  friend  at`X = 2.60 (S.D.=1.13). And in the result from interview on the causes of lacking Garavata, it was found that it came from different background of family and they got different training. The ways to solve these problems; school should provide the activity of promoting Garavata. In the camp activity, school should provide this activity continually, not just one time per year. In the teaching activity, the principles of Buddhist teachings should be inserted; 6 Garavatas, six directions and 6 Saraniyadhammas for encouraging students to understand the importance of living together with Garavata and should provide the activity promoting Garavata to students to realize the worth and live together in society happily.
