An Analytical Study of Kamma in Buddhist Scriptures

Abstract

This thesis has three objectives, 1) to study of the structure and issues of Kammanidãnasutta, 2) to study of Kamma appearing in Buddhist Scriptures, and       3) to analytical study of the cause of Kamma appearing in Kammanidãnasutta. This is the qualitative research which gathers data from the documents, analysis, and to lead the result of research present with the descriptive analysis. The result of study found that:-

 

             It found that Kammanidãnasutta is in the Añguttara Nikãya, Dasakanipãta Book of ten, and number 174. It is the number eight of the ten in the Jãnussonivagga, the main point is stated to the Kamma, and it is the cause of killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, malicious speech, harsh speech, gossip, covetousness, ill will, and wrong view. These are caused by the three defilements; the greed, hatred, and delusion which are the unwholesome course of action.

 

             Kamma means duty, doing, and working or acting which is from their action, it is the causes of the greed, hatred, and delusion. The volition is an important thing for action both good and bad. Kamma in Buddhist Scriptures has both good and bad action, dark and bright kamma. In Atthakã the kamma is devided into 12 kinds; the classification according to function, e.g., Reproductive kamma (janaka-kamma), Supportive kamma (upathambhaka-kamma), Obstructive or counteractive kamma (upapîaka-kamma), Destructive kamma (upaghãtaka-kamma), the classification according to function the order of ripening, e.g., Weighty kamma (garuka-kamma), Proximate kamma (asanna-kamma), Habitual kamma (acinna-kamma), and Reserve or cumulative kamma (katattã-kamma), the classification according to time of ripening or taking effect, e.g., Immediately effective kamma (ditthadhammavedanîya-kamma), Subsequently effective kamma (upapajjavedanîya-kamma), Indefinitely effective kamma (aparãpariyave danîya-kamma), and Ineffective kamma (ahosi-kamma). There are four roles and functions of Kamma; namely all living beings are the owners of their actions, they originate from their actions, they are related through their actions, and they have their actions as their refuge.

          The analysis of Kamma and the way of living found that, Kamma in Buddhism is from the belief in good or bad, Kamma and belief in auspicious thing, Kamma and the four paths of accomplishment. Kamma and the way of living will be the benefit to oneself by studying on the Kamma (action) and the result of Kamma.
