A Model of Modern Agricultural Development through Integrative Buddhist Agriculture

Abstract

The dissertation has three objectives : (1) to study of Buddhist concept of agriculture and modern sciences, (2) to study the model of agriculture in recent Thai society, and (3) to present the Buddhist integrated model of agricultural development.

            According to the research, Buddhist agriculture means husbandry or farming which focus and follow to Buddhist doctrines in particular base on Sila, not to harm to oneself and others, loving kindness, and compassion, sharing and living with the right livelihood as a foundation of the meditation practice.in case of the new theory agriculture, this includes organic farming, variety planting agriculture. The purpose is to increase the productivities while reduce expenses but more in self-reliability, environmental friendly. This concept would emphasizing on economy, society and environment as a main purpose.

            The Buddhist-agriculture of Buddhist monks who disseminate the knowledge to public in the present time, They used difference Dhamma method to reach to  public understanding and the best way of its kind is through farming instead of conservative preaching one. In Thailand, four groups of Buddhist monk are teaching Buddhist agriculture to the public as follow:-(1) Santi asoka group leads by samana Sila Chatawaro (2) Group of Pra Rachadhammanitessana (Payom Kalayāno) (3) Venerable Pra Subin Paṇīto (4)Venerable Pramaha Wuttichai wachirametee (V.Wachirametee) All of these four groups contain similarity in conduct such as:- to be diligence, honest, economy, harmony, sharing and environmental friendly.These are consist of Buddhist principles as Diṭṭhadhammikatthadham, Bhogavibhāga and KārmmabhogīSukha, Aparihāniyadham, bhahmavihāra, and Sammāājīva.

            Buddhist-agricultural pattern of four monk’s group called white Buddhist agriculture. There are also Buddhist economics to supervise their life in accordance with   modern society.

In case of farmers who follow Buddhist-agriculture method have produced a successful outcome in terms of mind development by following the five Precepts sharing, loving kindness and compassion, honest while performing.

            The integration of Buddhist-agriculture method into the way of life, while, Dhama in Buddhism also penetrating into people is mind. This Dhamma method is received by a group of people and experimenting with achievement outcome such as rice farmers, fruit plantations, husbandries and gardeners. The Buddhist-agriculture method is the farming for mental and living improvement. It will contribute sustainable development in society.
