An Analytical Study of Influence of Buddhism towards Beliefs on Tattoo in Lanna Society.

Abstract

Abstract

The purposes of this study were 1) to study the history and development of Buddhism in Lanna society, 2) to study the history and beliefs on tattoo in Lanna society, and 3) to analyze the influence of Buddhism to beliefs about tattoo in Lanna society.

The results of the history and development of Buddhism in Lanna society found that Buddhism came to the Lanna in the reign of The Great Queen Jamathevee period who she ruled Hiripunchai city. In 19 th century, Payamengrai, the king of Yonok kingdom who governed the Hiranngounyang city in Changsan region gathered smalls city around Northern Thailand to become bigger kingdom which later known as Lanna Kingdom. The kingdom grew up along with authority of Buddhism. Buddhism was prosperous in reign of Trilokaraj King Period. He arranged the rehearsal revision of the Buddhist scripture at Mahaphotharam Temple in 2020 BA. In 2101-2317 BA was the powerless period of Lanna because the Myanmar army had governed Lanna. So the Buddhism in Lanna was integrated with Myanmar Buddhism from that time on. 
The result of the historical study about the belief of tattoos in Lanna was found that having tattoo was influenced from Taiyai culture in Myanmar colonial period. It mixed with Lanna culture from Taiyai caravan. In the first period, tattoo was the beliefs that relate to culture and custom such as tattoos at the legs. In the first period, peoples like to tattoos for acceptance in society that they are man and brave. Afterwards, when there was the war, the tattoo culture had preferred from the soldiers who had to fight with the enemies while they believed that the tattoo could protect them from the weapons so the men in Lanna like to tattoo on their skins because when they had to fight in the war, tattoo could make the confident. In the present time, the tattoo culture of Lanna is still appeared in some area because in the globalization period come across to Lanna society the beliefs in power of tattoo had been less than in the past time. People taught that tattoo was arts on body only. However even people had less beliefs on tattoo but there are some groups still believed on the sacred of tattoo.
Finally, the result of an analytical study of influence of Buddhism to beliefs on tattoo in Lanna society was found that Buddhism concerned with beliefs of tattoo such as the pictures that was tattoo on the body, the characters that was written on the body etc. the influence on beliefs aspect: was found that people who came to tattoo because they believed that tattoo were the holy or sacred and are goodness for their life so the tattoo made the confidently for living. The influence on social aspect: was found that tattoo had two effects, on the positive; tattoo could create will power for working and living because they believed in power of tattoo that could protect them from the danger and their feel safety. On the negative, in the present, tattoo was acceptance in some groups because people who is tattoo would be bad and difficultly to apply for job. The influence on Physical and spiritual aspect: was found that tattoo couldn’t delete from their skin and made their bad feeling.
