Abstract

This research aims 1) to study the gratitude in Buddhist teachings, 2) to study the opinions on the gratitude performance toward parents of students at Taphanhin school, Taphanhin district, Phichit province and 3) to suggest the right method for gratitude performance toward parents of students at Taphanhin school, Taphanhin district, Phichit province.

The results of this study reveal that:

Katannukatavedi (gratitude) means the acknowledging what has been done to one directly and indirectly and gratefulness and mindfulness of benefits as well as seeking an opportunity to have done what could be done. For term ‘Katannukatavedi’, it comes from 2 words, namely, ‘Katannu’ means a person who has known what has been done to him and ‘Katavedi’ means the grateful one who has done what could be done. Therefore, Katannukatavedi is the important and basic virtue for humans and the symbol of good one in Buddhist teaching.

In the thirty-eight Mangalas (auspices), one of them, what points out the good omen, is ‘Matapitu-upatthana or a support the parents. Namely, the parents, who take care and support their children, can be called Brahma god, teachers andleaders for the ones requiring guidance or their own children For a characteristic of person who has the gratitude, he is a good person, who accompanies with stability and patience, takes care and supports their parents to live happily. A good person should accompany with both Katannu and Katavedi, because if person has no Katannu he also has no Katavedi, or if he has only Katannu so that his Katavedi is not perfect and gratefulness cannot occur. Thereby, persons Katannukatavedi should be perfect and under the right understanding (Sammaditthi) both in Dhamma case and in law case. Hence, people highly praise and respect him.

For students opinions on the gratitude performance toward their parents, the results show that it is at a high level ( = 4.00), and when considered the each aspect, the results find that it is at a high level in all aspects.

These findings suggest that 1) the school should arrange the activities for students to suggest and train them on supporting their parents rightly, 2) the school should provide the activities for students to suggest and train them on helping their parents works after school and on holidays, moreover on earning a special income for their family and study, this is to establish the good habits to them, 3) the school should train students on practice the good actions to maintain a good reputation of their family, 4) the school should train students on saving and keeping their parents’ property or money properly, moreover on being the grateful and good ones, and 5) the school should arrange the activities for students to train them always on making a merit, offering and dedicating to their parents after their passing away.
