Abstract

Abstract

            This Thesis has three objectives of study: to study perseverance in Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures; to study enlightenment in Theravāda Buddhist Scripture and; to study perseverance for enlightenment in Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures. Clarified and analyzed data are taken from the Theravada Buddhist scriptures and other related documents. The texts are composed, explained in details then verified by Buddhist scholars. From the study it found that;

Perseverance in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures means effort or exertion to alert body and mind at all times. It raises something hidden in one’s mind so one can be mindful in every breath one takes. Such good effort will lead to a more positive and higher achievement. Perseverance is one of the most important doctrines as it refers to the Right Effort in the Fourth Path. It supports other Paths (Magga) to attain an insight knowledge (Vipassanā Ňāna).

            Perseverance in the insight development is a principle used for an observation of the body, feeling, mind and mind-objects., Mindfulness is essentially composed of three factors: Effort (Atāpī) Awareness (Sampajāno) Mindfulness (Satimā) having an effort and mindfulness at proper moent until realization of the Four Noble Truths attaining the Nine Supermundane states which are Magga Phala Nibbāna.

            The insight development for enlightenment requires the thirty seven qualities contributing to enlightenment called the Bodhipakkhiya-dhamma. Perserverance is the important item. Sammavacama or Right Effort which the Great Efforts (Sammappadhāna) is a principle used in being mindfulness of every observation for abandoning covetousness and grief. The perserverance of insight development the indriya should be balance. Effort and Samadhi should be equal. If effort is more, Samadhi is less then meditators will become restlessness. If Samadhi is more effort is less then meditators will become lazy. The balancing of perserverance and Samadhi will help meditators in progressing respectively until enlightenment finally.
