Abstract

This thesis had three objectives; to study the Seven Purifications (Visuddhi) in the Theravāda Buddhist scripture, to study the Threefold Training in the Theravāda Buddhist scripture, to study the Conformance between the Seven Purifications and the Threefold Training in Insight Meditation Practice. Clarified data are taken from the Theravada Buddhist scriptures and other related documents, then composed, summarized, analyzed, explained in details, corrected and verified by Buddhist scholars. From the study it found that;

The purification without rough, middle and deep defilements in body and mind cause Pañña (wisdom) that leads to the purity to be complete in order to attain Nibbāna, by the purification process called the seven Visuddhi namely; Silavisuḍḍhi, Cittavisuddhi, Diṭṭhivisuddhi, Kankhāvitaraṇavisuddhi, Maggāmaggañaṇavisuddhi, Patipadāñāṇadassanavisuddhi , and  Ñāṇadassanavisuddhi. All Visuddhi were a result of insight meditation practice.

The Threefold Training is the education process which three items to learn are Adhisīlasikkhā- the training in higher morality, Adhicittasikkhā- the training in higher mentality, Adhipaññasikkhā- the training in higher wisdom, the knowledge, the truth, to know natural truth, natural law so called the Three Characteristics, the impermanence, suffering , and non-self as the truth and realize the Four Noble Truths.

The Three Educational Level; Silasikkhā, Cittasikkhā, Paññasikkhā, resulting in the seven purification stage namely the seven Visuddhi, Silavisuddhi, Cittavisuddhi, Diṭṭhivisuddhi, Kaṃkhāvitaraṇavisuddhi, Maggāmaggañāṇadassana visuddhi, Paṭipadāñāṇadassanavisuddhi, and Ñāṇadassanavisuddhi. The seven purification are the purity occurs from the Practice of the Threefold Training, Aḍhisilasikkhā-great morality, Aḍhicittasikkhā-great mentality, Aḍhipannsikkhā-great wisdom The Threefold training process are developed and resulting in the conformation between the seven purity stages, the seven visuddhi. Thus Adhisilasikkhā resulting in higher morality or Silavisuḍḍhi, Adhicittasikkha resulting in higher mentality called Cittavisuddhi, and Adhipaññāsikkha resulting in higher wisdom so called Kaṃkhāvitaraṇavisuddhi, Maggāmaggañāṇavisuddhi, Paṭipadāñāṇa-  dassanavisuddhi, Ñāṇadassanavisuddhi. The seven stage of purification resulted from the study of the Threefold Training via insight meditation practice.
